The apology issued by Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo to Asian nations following the racism scandal involving far-right parliamentarians is necessary, but it should not be the end of the matter. Public apologies carry weight only when accompanied by firm action and accountability. The circulation of derogatory images by elected representatives is not merely offensive; it undermines democratic values and damages Finland’s reputation as an inclusive and progressive society.
The parallel decision to strip Miss Finland of her crown in a separate controversy highlights an important principle: public figures, whether politicians or cultural representatives, must be held to high ethical standards. Tolerance for racism, even indirectly, sends a dangerous signal to minority communities and emboldens extremist ideologies.
This episode should prompt deeper reflection within Finland’s political system on the normalisation of far-right rhetoric. Stronger safeguards, clear consequences, and sustained dialogue on equality are essential. Respect for diversity must be practised consistently, not only reaffirmed during moments of international embarrassment.
