The recent news from Malaysia about the recovery of seven bodies of Rohingya migrants and the rescue of 13 others from a capsized boat is both heartbreaking and alarming. These migrants, fleeing persecution and poverty in Myanmar, risk their lives in search of safety and dignity. Sadly, many such journeys end in tragedy at sea, where desperate men, women, and even children pay the ultimate price for hope.
It is truly unfortunate that, despite knowing the extreme dangers of illegal sea travel, many people still risk their lives to reach other countries. The desperate conditions in their home nations — poverty, conflict, and lack of opportunity — force them to take this perilous path. These journeys often end in tragedy, with boats capsising and innocent lives lost in the deep waters.
The world must not ignore their suffering. Governments and international organisations should work together to create safe and legal migration routes, while also addressing the root causes that compel people to flee. No one should have to gamble with death in search of a better life.
