It is deeply shocking and distressing to learn that a large number of students in Indonesia have fallen ill after consuming free school meals (“Indonesia investigates as 700 more sick after eating free school meals,” Nov. 1, Gulf Today website). What was meant to be a noble initiative to support children’s nutrition and education has sadly turned into a public health crisis.
The Indonesian government must take this matter seriously and conduct a thorough judicial inquiry to identify the root cause of this tragedy. Providing free meals to students is indeed a commendable decision that reflects care and commitment toward children’s well-being. However, such programs must be managed with the highest standards of hygiene, quality control, and regular supervision.
Those responsible for negligence — whether suppliers, inspectors, or school administrators — should be held accountable for their failure to protect innocent lives. The safety of children must never be compromised under any circumstance. This incident should serve as a strong reminder that welfare programmes demand not only good intentions but also strict implementation and monitoring.
