Shubman Gill has been announced as India's new 50-overs captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, to lead the team in the three-match ODI series against Australia that is commencing on Oct.19. I really appreciate BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar for his forward thinking. Lots of former Indian cricketers and fans on social media are showing their reservations against this move. I don't know why they are against this change. Shubman is young and India should look forward to tomorrow under the new leadership.
We all know that Rohit was a great captain and amazing batter but Rohit is already 38 and is on the cusp of hanging up his boots, so India need a new captain who can be groomed for the long haul. And this is the perfect time for that. We should be ready to embrace the change. BCCI can’t sit on the past achievements of players, so it will have to look ahead. Rohit and Virat Kohli have done a lot for the team but now young guns should come forward. I hope this transition takes place smoothly. I am sure Shubman will show his leadership and become an asset for India.
