The Sharjah Police General Command has announced that 267 traffic accidents have been recorded since the beginning of the year. These accidents were caused by drivers being distracted by their mobile phones while driving, resulting in injuries and varying degrees of material loss.
In a social media post, the police explained that each of these statistics represents a painful story that could have been avoided if drivers had kept their focus on the road.
A few seconds of distraction can end a life or alter a destiny. They also noted that accidents caused by distracted driving often result from texting, scrolling, or taking a photo while behind the wheel — seemingly simple actions that can have dire consequences.
The stressed that using a mobile phone while driving is a major cause of traffic accidents. They emphasised the need for drivers to adhere to traffic laws and regulations, and to constantly monitor the road in order to ensure their own safety and that of others.
They urged drivers to act responsibly and refrain from using their phones until they have stopped safely. They emphasised that the road is not a place for browsing; rather, it requires constant awareness and attention.
They concluded their message with the words, 'Don't be the next statistic.'
