In the world of film awards, not all winners are worthy winners. As we wait for the Academy Awards to happen on March 12, we are taking a look at past films which have won Oscars while not being the most-worthy in the eyes of critics and fans.

“CODA” came out back in 2021 and ended up winning a Best Picture Oscar, much to the dismay of film critics who do not believe it should have won anything. The drama romance is the English language remake of a French movie that came out in 2014. Starring Emilia Jones, Troy Kotsur and Daniel Durant to name a few, the film tells the story of child who is born to a deaf family. Critics describe the characters, plot and storyline as “frustrating.” In spite of this, the movie won not only a Best Picture award but also Best Supporting Actor for Kotsur and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Another movie on this list of unworthy winners is “The Danish Girl.” Eddie Redmayne, Alicia Vikander and Amber Heard make up the cast of this 2015 film which is based on a novel of the same name by author David Ebershoff from 2000. The story is based in mid 1920s Copenhagen and follows a group of artists and their problems. Some critics believe that the film only won Best Picture because of the director, Tom Hooper. However, Vikander also won Best Supporting Actress and Redmayne was nominated for Best Actor.
