"Al Khaleej" team documented on video the journey from Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Road, through the Al Khulafa Al Rashideen interchange on Al Ittihad Road, to the Al Khan area in Sharjah. The trip took an average of just two minutes, highlighting the smooth traffic flow along the new corridor and its role in improving connectivity between Sharjah and Dubai.
The first phase of the project included a bridge connecting the Ring Road to Al Khan Street at the Third Industrial Interchange, along with bridges at the First and Second Industrial Interchanges leading toward the Al Khulafa Al Rashideen interchange. It also involved partially expanding that interchange, increasing the number of lanes beneath it, and opening a section of the Al Taawun interchange.
His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the first phase on Wednesday. Several bridges and interchanges opened during this phase to ease traffic traveling from Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Road toward Expo Centre Sharjah.
The project was carried out by the Sharjah Implementation Authority for Initiatives in collaboration with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), as part of wider efforts to develop the road network and infrastructure. It aims to deliver sustainable traffic solutions that keep pace with urban expansion and population growth while meeting the needs of road users.
Work is underway to complete bridges serving traffic in the opposite direction at the First, Second, and Third Industrial Interchanges, further expand the Al Khulafa Al Rashideen interchange on Al Ittihad Road, and build a bridge linking it to Jamal Abdul Nasser Street. The second phase will include the opening of the Al Taawun tunnel and the full opening of the elevated interchange.
The project comprises five main components: the development of the Al Taawun interchange, the expansion of the Al Khulafa Al Rashideen interchange, improvements to the First and Second Industrial Interchanges, the construction of a new corridor at the Third Industrial Interchange, and the development of a bypass route extending from Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Road toward the Ring Road.
The roads covered by the project span approximately 9 kilometers. The new corridors will accommodate thousands of additional vehicles per hour, helping ease congestion, shorten travel times, and strengthen connections between residential, commercial, and industrial areas in Sharjah and Dubai.
