A truck struck a metal barrier on Emirates Road, in the direction of Abu Dhabi. Preliminary information suggests that the driver fell asleep at the steering wheel, lost control of the truck, and veered off course, hitting the barrier before coming to a stop off the road. The driver sustained minor injuries and received medical attention at the scene.
Brigadier Jumaa Salem Bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic, warned that fatigue and exhaustion impair drivers’ concentration, alertness, and ability to react to sudden situations. This can lead to a loss of vehicle control, lane departures, and collisions with metal barriers or other vehicles, putting drivers, passengers, and other road users at risk.
Brigadier Jumaa stressed that drowsy driving poses a serious risk and requires greater awareness and strict adherence to traffic safety guidelines. He noted that fatigued drivers may no longer be able to operate their vehicles safely, even if they believe they can continue their journey.
He explained that losing focus for just a few seconds can cause a vehicle to strike a barrier or veer off the road. Drowsiness reduces attention and slows decision-making, significantly increasing the risk of losing control and causing serious accidents.
Brigadier Jumaa stressed the importance of getting adequate rest before driving to improve the ability to respond to unexpected road situations. He urged motorists to remain in their designated lanes, follow traffic safety guidelines, and stop driving immediately if they feel tired or drowsy, helping protect themselves and other road users.
He also encouraged the public to visit the traffic safety platform at www.amanroads.gov.ae. The platform provides information and guidance to promote a culture of road safety, raise awareness of the risks associated with unsafe driving behaviors, and reinforce safe driving practices, helping reduce traffic accidents and protect lives and property.
