A woman identified by her initials, S.N., woke up one morning to a series of text messages notifying her that large sums of money had been deducted from her bank account, draining savings she had built up from her salary over several years.
Shocked by the unexpected transactions, the woman, who works for a private company, immediately contacted Dubai Police for help.
“I wasn’t even using my phone or making any purchases. I was fast asleep while someone unknown was draining money from my account,” she recalled.
Her complaint was among several received by the General Department of Criminal Investigation at Dubai Police, prompting an investigation that led to the arrest of a six member fraud gang dubbed the ‘Unexpected Deduction’ gang.
The suspects had set up a fake online shopping website to capture victims’ bank card details, which they subsequently used to make unauthorised purchases and transfer money into digital wallets.
Dubai Police explained that victims discovered multiple unexpected deductions from their accounts, despite having neither made nor authorised the transactions. The gang had created digital wallets specifically to receive the stolen funds.
Investigation Leads to Six Arrests
Following the complaints, Dubai Police formed a specialised investigation team to track the suspects and uncover their fraudulent activities.
Through extensive surveillance and investigative efforts, officers identified all six gang members and located their residence. A coordinated raid was subsequently carried out, resulting in their arrest.
During the operation, officers recovered bank cards obtained from victims that the gang intended to resell to other fraudsters, along with cheque books used to facilitate their illegal activities.
Investigations revealed that the gang had opened digital wallets and bank accounts to receive funds transferred using victims’ compromised bank card details.
The suspects also sold some of the stolen card information to other individuals in exchange for money, enabling further fraudulent deductions and transfers from victims’ accounts.
Dubai Police explained that the gang exploited digital wallets provided by a telecommunications company to receive the proceeds of their illegal activities, using electronic payment services to facilitate the scheme.
Public Urged to Exercise Caution
As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen financial and digital security, Dubai Police urged the public to exercise caution when conducting online transactions and verify the authenticity of websites before entering personal or banking information.
The force stressed the importance of never sharing credit card details or sensitive banking information with untrusted individuals or organisations, warning that such information could be used to steal funds or exploit accounts for fraudulent activities.
Dubai Police also encouraged the public to promptly report any unfamiliar financial transactions or suspicious activities through the Dubai Police contact centre on 901, the Police Eye service, or the eCrime feature, available through the Dubai Police smart app and official website.
Dubai Police reaffirmed that public awareness of emerging fraud techniques and timely reporting are essential to helping law enforcement authorities detect criminal activities and protect the community against financial fraud and cybercrime.
