Sharjah City Municipality redeveloped Al Ittihad Square Park, carrying out a range of improvements that included upgrading pathways, constructing an 800-meter cycling track, replacing lighting poles and renewing green spaces.
Additionally, the project included the provision of areas for play and sports activities, all aimed at enhancing the visitor experience and elevating the quality of the recreational facilities.
Comprehensive Development
During a conversation with the Direct Line programme, Eng. Abdullah Abdul Aziz Bukhater, Director of Projects Department at Sharjah City Municipality, revealed details about the project.

He explained that it included the construction of a walkway designed for physical activities as well as an 800-meter-long cycling track—providing a dedicated path for cycling enthusiasts and encouraging members of the community to engage in exercise.
The work included replacing the cement paving tiles both inside and outside the park as well as completely renewing the green spaces. These improvements enhanced the site’s overall appearance and appeal, while providing facilities that supported daily use and offered visitors a variety of ways to enjoy their time outdoors.
Sustainable Lighting
As many as 50 lighting poles were replaced in collaboration with Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA), he said, adding that the new, energy-efficient poles featured a design inspired by palm trees, combining aesthetic appeal with practical functionality, while supporting sustainability goals and the rationalization of resource consumption.
The lighting project also encompassed the seven pathways leading to the memorial. The existing, taller poles, which obstructed the view, were replaced with 49 shorter, low-profile lighting fixtures. This change helped highlight the memorial and enhanced the visual appeal of the surrounding pathways, while still providing the necessary illumination for park visitors.
Family amenities
The project included the supply and installation of 25 benches in various designs and styles, providing suitable spaces for rest and for enjoying the surrounding facilities, Bukhater said, adding that a children’s play area was also set up concurrently with the opening of the park.

Over the coming month, two additional play areas would be supplied and installed, bringing to three the total number of children’s play areas and expanding the range of recreational options, he said, adding that work was also underway to add three zones equipped with exercise machines along the sports walkway.
Security and Safety
The development works included the construction and enhancement of a perimeter fence around the park, aimed at strengthening security and safety systems. This was carried out with careful attention to aesthetic aspects, highlighting the memorial monument while preserving the visual character of the square and improving the organization of movement within and around the park.
Bukhater confirmed that the park opened to the public last Monday and had since seen a large turnout of visitors, a clear indication of the importance of developing public facilities and providing spaces that combine recreation, sports and the enjoyment of green areas.
