Al Ain Civil, Commercial and Administrative Cases Court ordered a woman to pay Dhs10,000 in compensation to another woman for using insulting language on social media, tarnishing her standing and reputation.
The woman’s insult caused the victim material and moral harms, specifically by infringing upon her dignity, social standing, and professional reputation, and by inflicting psychological distress and embarrassment in the presence of others.
Earlier, the victim filed a lawsuit against the defendant, in which she requested the court to obligate her to pay her Dhs35,000 in compensation for the material and moral harms caused and to settle the incurred fees and expenses.
The plaintiff stated that the defendant had insulted her using language offensive to her dignity and reputation via social media. This incident was the subject of a prior criminal case under which the defendant was sentenced to one month in jail with stay of execution for three years and fined Dhs10,000.
The defendant appealed the judgment and the Court of Appeal accepted the appeal in form but rejected it on the merits, upholding the appealed judgment. As the judgment was not further challenged, it became final.
Asserting that the defendant’s actions had caused her material and moral harms as manifested in the infringement of her dignity, standing and professional reputation, coupled with the psychological distress and embarrassment she suffered before others, the plaintiff filed the present lawsuit with the aforementioned requests.
The court hereby assessed the compensation for the moral harms that the plaintiff had befallen at Dhs10,000.
