Sheikh Ahmed Bin Rashid: A legacy of service, sport and philanthropy

With hearts faithful to God’s will and decree, and with deep sorrow and grief, the UAE has bid farewell to the late Sheikh Ahmed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who passed away on Monday.

Born in 1956, the late Sheikh was a national icon and a leader who dedicated his life to serving his country and community. He was the fourth and youngest son of the late Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum and the younger brother of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum mourned the passing of Sheikh Ahmed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who departed this life on Monday morning.

His Highness said: “May God have mercy on Sheikh Ahmed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. May God have mercy on you, my brother; you have returned to a Generous and Great Lord. You may be absent from our sight, Ahmed, but you remain in our prayers and hearts.

His Highness added: “May God grant you a place in His vast Paradise and grant us—and your loved ones—patience and solace. Indeed, we belong to God, and indeed, to Him we shall return.” 

The late Sheikh grew up under the tutelage of the esteemed school of Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed, which instilled in him values of leadership, generosity and unwavering devotion to the nation.

Sheikh Ahmed Bin Rashid received advanced military training at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, equipping him with knowledge and strategic discipline. Upon his return after graduation, he joined the Central Military Zone in Dubai and later assumed its command, spearheading tireless efforts to develop and modernise the facility into a leading military base supporting the UAE’s national defence system.

He also ably served as Deputy Chief of Dubai Police and Public Security, contributing to strengthening the foundations of security and stability while safeguarding the nation’s achievements.

Beyond his security and military roles, the late Sheikh was also involved in business and economic development. He chaired the RM Group and the Dubai Real Estate Centre, playing an active role in supporting the Emirate’s sustainable urban and economic growth while fostering an environment conducive to investment and institutional innovation.

Sports

Sheikh Ahmed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum is regarded as one of the UAE’s most prominent pioneers and historic leaders in the sports sector.

Al Wasl Sports Club

He founded Al Wasl Sports Club in 1960, transforming it into one of the most prominent, popular and decorated clubs in the history of UAE football. He remained an exceptional president and steadfast supporter of the club, earning the deep appreciation and respect of its vast fanbase, known as the “Emperor”.

Marine sports

He played an active role in establishing and launching the Dubai International Marine Club, serving as its first president in 1988. He laid the foundations that helped make it the first club of its kind in the Middle East and Africa and a member of the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM). He also played a key role in the launch of the world-renowned Victory Team.

Equestrianism and horse racing

In the early 1990s, he established Jebel Ali Racecourse as a premier venue for horse racing in the UAE. He also founded Al Adiyat magazine and contributed to the launch of the Dubai Racing Club, helping cement the UAE’s global standing in the equestrian world.

In addition to his official and sporting roles, Sheikh Ahmed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum was known for his commitment to philanthropy and support for those in need. He was always ready to extend a helping hand on various occasions and in humanitarian situations.

His commitment extended to supporting community initiatives and charitable endeavours, driven by his belief in the importance of social solidarity and compassion, and his dedication to standing by people and offering them assistance.

This humanitarian aspect remained a constant part of his life—far removed from the limelight—leaving a lasting and positive impression on those who knew him and benefited from his generosity.

Sheikh Ahmed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum has left an indelible mark on the hearts of his fellow citizens.

May God Almighty shower the nation’s departed son with His vast mercy, grant him a place in His spacious Paradise, and bestow patience and solace upon the noble Al Maktoum family and all who loved him.
