Three-month midday work ban ends on Sept.15

The midday work ban in the UAE ends on Tuesday (Sept.15, 2026) after being implemented for three months as part of the policy to protect labour from heat stress, which prohibited performing work under sunlight and in open areas from 12:30pm to 3:00pm, according to what was announced by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), which implemented the policy to protect labour from heat stress for the 22nd consecutive year, during the period from June 15 to Sept. 15, 2026.

MoHRE emphasised the importance of the partnership methodology it adopts with the private sector, and its vital role in establishing a leading work environment model in the country, especially in light of companies recording a commitment level exceeding 99% in implementing the heat stress labour protection policy during previous years.

MoHRE praised the efforts of its partners in the government and private sectors and community members in supporting the success of this pioneering initiative since its launch, and activating the path of the leading labor market in the UAE.

The policy to protect labour from heat stress is considered a gain in the labour market, a main pillar in the occupational health and safety system, and an established culture among employers, given its importance in maintaining the health and safety of labour and protecting them and avoiding injuries and damages which may result from working in high temperatures during the summer months, MoHRE explained.

The heat stress labour protection policy excludes some works which must be carried out without stopping for technical reasons, such as asphalt mix spreading and concrete pouring works, if it is not possible to implement or complete them after the ban period, MoHRE added. The exceptions also include works necessary to ward off danger or repair faults which affect the community in general, such as water supply line interruptions, electricity outages, traffic disruptions, and other faults in basic services, in addition to works which require a permit from a competent government authority due to their impact on traffic and public life.

It is worth noting that the heat stress labour protection policy obliged companies to prepare shaded areas for workers that protect them from sunlight during the break period, or while practicing licensed excluded works, and to provide appropriate cooling tools, such as fans, sufficient quantities of water, and hydration materials such as salts and similar items approved for use by local authorities in the UAE, along with providing comfort facilities and first aid equipment at work sites.

The inspection system at MoHRE monitors the extent of companies' commitment to implementing the policy through its smart digital tools and field tours, in parallel with implementing awareness campaigns to introduce the importance of this policy and its role in maintaining the health and safety of labour.
