Engineer Mohammed Shawkat Odeh, Director of the International Astronomical Centre (IAC), said that astronomers detected a small object, temporarily named CERNQ52, on September 6, 2026. Subsequent trajectory analyses reveal that this object is on a course towards Earth's atmosphere, anticipated to enter within hours of being spotted.
He noted that the discovery was made by the Mount Lemmon Survey in Arizona. Information released by the European Space Agency's Near-Earth Object Coordination Centre estimates the object's diameter to be between 0.6 and 1.2 meters. As per one of the most recent calculations, its entry into the atmosphere is expected between 16:07 and 16:12 GMT. However, these predictions may change with the addition of new observations.
He mentioned that some estimates suggested the entry would occur between 16:00 and 16:35 GMT, over the Indian Ocean, near northwestern Australia. This was expected to create a meteor or a very bright fireball, especially since the area would be in darkness at that time.
There is no need for concern due to the asteroid's small size; it does not pose a threat to the population. Most of it is expected to disintegrate as it enters the atmosphere, though there is a chance that small fragments might survive as meteorite debris.
He further noted that the scientific significance lies in astronomers' ability to detect this object just hours before its entry into the atmosphere and continue updating its trajectory with new observations. Initial reports suggest it could be the first known Aten class object detected in space before hitting Earth, although final orbital classification is still pending.
