Dubai to open Emirates Road's expansion on Sunday to ease traffic flow from Sharjah

Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will open the expansion of Emirates Road on Sunday (Aug.30, 2026) after adding two new lanes over a length of 5 km, for those coming from the Emirate of Sharjah up to the Wadi Al Amardi area exit.

This comes as part of the RTA's efforts aimed at enhancing the road network and increasing its operational efficiency, by providing long-term traffic solutions which contribute to the smooth flow of movement between the Emirate of Dubai and the Northern Emirates.

The project also reflects the RTA's strategic vision to develop major axes in the Emirate, according to proactive plans based on traffic studies and keeping pace with population and urban growth, to raise the efficiency of the road network and provide a safe and sustainable transportation system which keeps up with the continuous increase in daily travel between the emirates of Sharjah and Dubai and meets future growth needs.

Two lanes will raise the road capacity from 12,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour.

The traffic solutions on Emirates Road included increasing the number of lanes from 6 to 8 lanes, to raise the road capacity from 12,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour, which contributes to enhancing the road capacity, improving traffic flow efficiency, and reducing travel time by up to 25% during peak hours.

Emirates Road is considered one of the most important strategic traffic axes in the UAE as it links the Emirate of Dubai with the Northern Emirates and accommodates heavy traffic for private vehicles and trucks, serving 240,000 vehicles daily in both directions, and also connects the Emirate of Dubai with several main roads and residential, industrial, and logistical areas.

It is worth noting that a number of projects and traffic improvements have been implemented on the road during the past phase to enhance the quality of life and support Dubai's leading position in easy and sustainable mobility.
