Emirati children combine national values and etiquette with life skills

The "Jeel 71" (Generation 71) Programme is actively addressing the rapid transformations in modern childhood environments by offering an educational framework designed to build the character of Emirati children.

By combining national identity with essential life skills, the initiative equips the younger generation to navigate contemporary demands with confidence and responsibility.

Launched through the joint efforts of the National Academy for Childhood Development and the Ministry of Family, the summer edition of "Jeel 71" aligns with the UAE's designation of 2026 as the "Year of the Family," underscoring the nation's commitment to supporting families and strengthening their foundational role in child-rearing. Rather than limiting its scope to purely recreational or educational activities, the programme provides an integrated model that translates abstract cultural values into daily practical habits, enhancing independence and promoting a positive presence within both the family and the wider community.

Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Dr. Meera Al Kaabi, Acting President of the National Academy for Childhood Development, explained that this year’s summer edition focuses specifically on children aged 9 to 13. She noted that this pivotal age bracket marks the phase where personal character begins to crystallise, and where children develop the capacity to assume personal responsibility, interact constructively with their surroundings, and build their understanding of cooperation and belonging.

Dr. Al Kaabi highlighted that "Jeel 71" delivers tailored, gender-specific workshops for boys and girls that account for the distinct developmental needs of each group. The curriculum emphasises practical application over theoretical knowledge, integrating traditional Emirati etiquette (Sana'a) and authentic heritage with modern life skills. She stressed that building national identity extends beyond familiarisation with customs, requiring the daily practice of core principles such as self-reliance, mutual respect, and prudent decision-making.

Underlining the family as the primary environment where these acquired skills are applied, Dr. Al Kaabi called on parents to view "Jeel 71" as an opportunity that combines learning, active engagement, and real-world execution. Encouraging children to fulfil daily responsibilities at home sustains the impact of the programme and fosters continuous dialogue between parents and children.

Following an inaugural edition that attracted over 2,700 registration applications and welcomed more than 400 participating children, the programme has expanded its geographical footprint across Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, and Fujairah. Dr Al Kaabi affirmed that this expansion addresses a growing demand from families for structured educational environments that combine learning with enjoyment, reinforcing the UAE's strategic investment in human capital from early childhood.
