7-year-old Indian girl dies after falling from third-floor apartment in Sharjah

A seven-year-old Indian expatriate died after falling from the third floor of a residential building in Sharjah’s Al Nabba area on Monday, her family said.

The girl, Safa Mubarak, was a Grade 2 pupil at a school in Ajman. She was the only child of her parents, who are from Kerala.

According to her uncle, Mansoor Ali, Safa was at the family’s apartment when the incident occurred. Her father, Mubarak Ali, had briefly gone downstairs to the family car with Mansoor, while her mother, Murshida Mubarak, had already left for her job at a Sharjah real estate company.

Mansoor said the family believes Safa had been sleeping and may have woken up after her father left. She apparently went towards a window and opened its sliding door before falling, he said.

Mubarak, who works at a healthcare facility in Dubai, was still downstairs at the time.

The family had only recently returned to the UAE following a visit to their hometown in Kerala. Safa had been preparing to return to school after the holiday, with classes due to resume next week.

Her sudden death has plunged the family into grief.

Mansoor said relatives were completing the necessary procedures following the tragedy. The family plans to bury Safa in the UAE and is working with the authorities to complete the formalities.

Mubarak, speaking while travelling with Safa’s parents after completing some paperwork, declined to elaborate on the tragedy.

Sharjah Police is looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Gulf Today could not immediately obtain an official statement from the police.

The tragedy is a reminder of the risks posed by unsecured windows in homes with young children. Child-safety specialists advise parents to use window guards or restrictors, secure locks and other protective measures, particularly in apartments located on upper floors.
