Latest archaeological discoveries reveal new human history insights in UAE

Archaeological discoveries and scientific studies announced across the UAE during 2026 have revealed new chapters in the nation's human history, settlement patterns, and ancient economic life, reshaping the understanding of the region from prehistoric times to the Bronze Age.

The findings stem from ongoing survey, excavation, and research efforts that provide deeper insight into how ancient communities adapted to environmental shifts and maintained regional connections.

In Sharjah, an international research project uncovered new evidence of repeated early human occupation at the Jebel Al Buhais rock shelter across widely spaced periods, challenging previous assumptions regarding human settlement in the region. Published in Nature Communications in March 2026, the study documented human presence dating back 60,000 to 16,000 years, providing a vital record of adaptation to severe climate fluctuations and drought.

In July, the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) announced the discovery of a major tomb dating to the Wadi Suq and Late Bronze Age periods (c. 2000-1300 BCE) within the Qattara Archaeological Cemetery in Al Ain.

The findings stem from ongoing survey, excavation, and research efforts that provide deeper insight into how ancient communities adapted to environmental shifts and maintained regional connections.

Remarkably preserved, the tomb was constructed using repurposed carved stone blocks from earlier Umm al-Nar funerary structures (c. 2700-2000 BCE). The 11-by-2.5-metre collective tomb served hundreds of individuals over at least a millennium, yielding pottery, weaponry, and personal ornaments. The human remains and artifacts are undergoing isotopic and DNA analyses to map ancient trade networks, diets, health, and migration routes.

The Qattara discovery adds further depth to Al Ain’s cultural sites, which were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2011.

International recognition for UAE heritage expanded further in 2026 when the Ministry of Culture announced the inscription of five new Emirati sites on the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) Heritage List.

The listings include Saruq Al Hadid in Dubai, alongside four sites in Sharjah: Jebel Faya in the Central Region, the historical towers and forts of Khorfakkan (including the Portuguese Fort and Al Adwani Tower), Nahwa, and Wadi Al Helo.

Wadi Al Helo features Bronze Age petroglyphs and historic village remains, while Nahwa contains rock art spanning from the Bronze Age to modern times, documented using 3D digital technology.

To support further research, Jebel Faya entered a new scientific phase backed by a AED 2 million research grant running from 2026 to 2028.

These 2026 milestones highlight the UAE's comprehensive strategy of excavation, restoration, digital documentation, and international registration, ensuring the nation's rich historical narrative is preserved and shared globally.
