Sharjah uses latest AI tech to enhance safety and security of buses, taxis

As part of its ongoing efforts to develop the smart transport system, Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) continues to employ the latest AI technologies in intercity buses and taxis, thanks to an advanced system of smart surveillance cameras that contribute to enhancing traffic safety, raising operational efficiency and improving customer experience.

Intercity buses are equipped with 10 smart cameras inside and outside the bus to monitor the road, passenger movement and driver’s behaviour, while taxis are equipped with 5 smart cameras fully supported by AI technologies, providing comprehensive coverage of the road and the interior cabin.

The system is characterised by advanced capabilities for detecting objects and pedestrians, monitoring side crossings, analysing driver’s behaviour, counting passengers, detecting accidents and lost items and issuing immediate alerts with a view to enhancing safety levels and raising the quality of services provided.

SRTA continues to invest in advanced technological solutions to provide a safe and sustainable transportation system that keeps pace with the best global practices, Eng. Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of SRTA, said.

This initiative is in line with the objectives of the Year of the Family by providing a safer and more reliable transportation environment that contributes to enhancing the quality of life and family stability, he added.

Meanwhile, Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Jarwan, Director of Transport Affairs at SRTA, explained that the smart camera system represented a qualitative step towards enhancing operational monitoring and raising the efficiency of response to accidents and observations.

AI technologies have become a fundamental pillar in developing transport services, ensuring a safer and more comfortable journey for passengers and drivers and supporting SRTA’s efforts in providing smart services that meet the aspirations of society, he said.

This step came as part of SRTA’s strategy to adopt modern technologies and smart innovations with a view to enhancing the efficiency of the transport system and consolidating Sharjah’s position as a leading destination in providing safe and sustainable transport services.
