Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) has started implementing the water conservation initiative in citizens' homes in Mughaider suburb in the Emirate of Sharjah by installing conservation tools and devices in approximately 2,000 homes in the suburb.
This follows the implementation of the initiative in Al Rahmaniyah suburb in 4,000 homes and the installation of more than 14,000 conservation devices so far, which contributed to reducing consumption by up to 59%.
Work is ongoing to complete the installation of conservation tools in some homes in the suburb, according to Majid Haremel Al Shamsi, Executive Director of Institutional Support at SEWA.
Al Shamsi confirmed that the initiative was launched in implementation of the vision and directives of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. It aims, he added, to install more than 750,000 water conservation devices in more than 45,000 homes across various cities and regions of the Emirate of Sharjah.
Rashid Al Marzouqi, Director of the Media and Communication Department at SEWA, explained that the specialised technical teams provided by SEWA, numbering up to 12, in addition to the necessary equipment, tools, and machinery, will contribute to completing the initiative within the specified timeframe and according to the best specifications.
He also pointed out that SEWA provided a mobile platform in shopping centres, in addition to a number of events and media material to raise awareness of the importance of the initiative and how to benefit from it.
This includes explaining correct conservation behaviour and methods, and how to use and maintain conservation devices effectively, Al Marzouqi stated, adding that the impact of the initiative will be evaluated periodically to ensure it achieves its desired goals.
Database for homes
He added that SEWA was keen to establish mechanisms comprising 8 main points to ensure the implementation of the initiative, including providing a database for targeted homes, determining the budget, setting a specific schedule for implementation, and distributing tasks to work teams composed of specialised and qualified technicians.
The mechanisms also include, according to Al Marzouqi, communicating with homeowners to obtain approval for inspection and installation, technicians visiting homes to start installing parts according to the best specifications, conducting studies and surveys specific to the initiative to measure customer satisfaction, performing a final evaluation of the initiative, determining the quantities saved, and preparing the final report of the initiative.
Al Marzouqi called on citizens to participate in this initiative and cooperate with specialised technicians from SEWA, in case of contacting them to install water-saving devices for free in homes.
He extended an invitation to repair any leaks in home connections and contribute to developing awareness and instilling a culture of conservation in our sons and daughters, and avoiding waste in daily uses, as water is the lifeline and its conservation is a religious and national duty.
