Woman beggar detained in Jordan with huge cash haul of $46,600

On Wednesday, teams from Jordan’s Ministry of Social Development, in coordination with the Public Security Directorate, detained a female beggar in downtown Amman who was found in possession of around $46,600.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Social Development, the woman had accumulated the money through begging in downtown Amman and had been exchanging her earnings into foreign currency.

The Ministry said the woman was handed over to the relevant judicial authorities for necessary legal action. Investigations also revealed that she had previously been involved in begging.

The Ministry urged the public to refrain from giving money directly to beggars and instead channel aid and donations through certified charities and organisations officially authorised to collect contributions.

It noted that some individuals engaged in begging may attempt to gain sympathy by pretending to be sick or experiencing financial hardship.

The Ministry also said it welcomes complaints and reports about begging through its hotline, as well as through anti-begging committees and teams operating across the Kingdom.
