Man jailed in Sharjah for blasphemy, to be deported after completing prison term

Sharjah Misdemeanor Court sentenced an Arab to one month in jail to be followed by deportation after he was convicted of blasphemy.

Earlier, a man reported to the police that while he was holding a telephone conversation with the accused, their dispute became heated and snowballed into a verbal altercation, during which the accused uttered phrases of insult against God and repeated those phrases more than once, without backing down from them.

The man submitted an audio recording of the call.

The competent authorities initiated legal proceedings and the accused was referred to courts of law.

Confronted with the charge against him, the defendant did not deny it, pleading that he was in a state of anger and agitation during the altercation and that his actions were unintentional.

After reviewing the case file and the evidence it contained and hearing the accused’s statements and defence, the court found him guilty and sentenced him to one month in jail to be followed by deportation.
