Sharjah installs and replaces 8,900 smart meters at homes across the city

Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) announced it completed the installation of 6,641 new smart meters and replacement of 2,280 old meters with smart ones all over the city, bringing to 8,921 the total number of meters installed and replaced during the first half of 2026.

Eng. Ahmed Al Bas, Deputy Director of Electricity Distribution Department at SEWA, stated that these efforts came as a complement to SEWA’s strategy to expand smart distribution network applications and provide innovative solutions that would raise operational efficiency and support environmental sustainability in the emirate.

Smart meters represent a quantum leap in managing energy and water consumption, as they are characterized by their ability to transmit data and readings with high accuracy and round the clock, he said.

This would reduce operational errors, speed up billing procedures and monitor electrical loads to prevent malfunctions and any errors at an early stage in order to address them immediately, he added.

The project to replace old meters is proceeding according to a specific schedule, encompassing all residential, commercial and industrial areas in Sharjah City, he said.

SEWA is continuing its efforts to install smart meters in all areas of the emirate, relying on the latest global technologies and systems in line with Sharjah's vision of building a smart and sustainable city that provides the highest standards of comfort and reliability for its residents, he added.
