Yahsat 4 satellite to be launched in 2027, to succeed Yahsat 1

Ali Al Hashemi, CEO of Space 42's space services division and the first Emirati to chair the board of the Global Satellite Operators Association (GSOA), announced plans for the next phase, which includes the launch of Yahsat 4 in 2027 and Yahsat 5 in 2028. These satellites will replace the services of Yahsat 1 and Yahsat 2, ensuring that the UAE government continues to have long-term, secure, and dependable sovereign connectivity.

In an interview with Al Khaleej newspaper, Al Hashemi highlighted that the Foresight constellation is set to reach full maturity by 2027. This development will enhance Space42's Earth observation capabilities and transform space data into practical solutions. He stressed that the Foresight programme signifies progress in building Emirati sovereign capabilities. The country now boasts a constellation of radar satellites and an assembly, integration, and testing facility in Abu Dhabi. These resources enable the creation of a national system, fostering technical skills, knowledge transfer, operation of space assets, and the transformation of data into solutions supporting national security, emergency response, infrastructure planning, and resource management.

He further explained that Space42 is engaged in various programmes reflecting its shift from asset ownership to building an integrated system of capabilities and services. In satellite communications, Thuraya 4 marks a significant advancement towards next-generation sovereign and reliable communication services. This development paves the way for advanced offerings such as direct device-to-satellite communication, the Internet of Things, and communication solutions for sectors and areas where terrestrial networks are not viable. He mentioned that Space42 is developing Equates, a joint venture with Viasat, to deliver global direct device-to-satellite communication services, strengthening the company's position in non-terrestrial networks.
