Abu Dhabi Criminal Court issued a verdict convicting a man who deliberately committed an act that endangered people’s lives by driving a vehicle on the public road recklessly and dangerously and swerving it several times suddenly, risking his life and the lives of others.
The court sentenced the convict to six months in jail and fined him Dhs50,000 for the charge against him plus Dhs20,000, this being the estimated value of the vehicle used in the crime, which was proven to be owned by another man.
The court also ordered the convict’s driving licence to be suspended for one year after the sentence was carried out.
Earlier, Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution referred the accused to the competent court immediately after the concerned police authorities completed the arrest and investigation procedures. The accused was seen driving recklessly on the public road and deliberately swerving repeatedly, which posed a direct threat to the safety of road users.
The court based its conviction on the evidence and proofs contained in the case file, including arrest reports, police inferences and technical materials derived from surveillance camera recordings, which documented the defendant’s commission of the act.
Meanwhile, the Public Prosecution called on drivers to abide by traffic rules and regulations and to act responsibly in order to preserve road safety and protect road users.
Reckless driving or engaging in dangerous traffic practices are considered dangerous behaviours that lead perpetrators to be legally accountable and get severe penalties, in accordance with the legislation in force in the country, it said.
