Sharjah Economic Development Department (SEDD) concluded the “Knowledge Economy” programme that was organised with the College of Business Administration at the University of Sharjah (UoS), where the winning and outstanding student research projects were honoured in recognition of their efforts and active participation in the programme.
The honouring ceremony was attended by Abdelaziz Omar Al Midfa, Director of Government Communication Department at SEDD, Dr. Amr Saleh, Economic Adviser at SEDD, Prof. Ilhan Ozturk, Dean of the College of Business Administration at UoS, and several faculty members of the college.
The ceremony comes within the concerns to enhance research cooperation between SEDD and UoS, with the aim of linking academic knowledge with practical applications in the economic field, in order to contribute to supporting the sustainable development process in Sharjah.
Commenting on this, Abdulaziz Al Midfa, Director of Government Communication Department at SEDD, stressed that SEDD is committed to strengthening strategic partnerships with academic institutions by investing in young talent and supporting applied scientific research that contributes to developing the business environment and raising the competitiveness of the local economy, in line with the development directions of the emirate.
On the other hand, Dr. Amr Saleh, the Economic Adviser at SEDD, stated that the “Knowledge Economy” programme has been ongoing with the UoS for about 10 years and has contributed to involving university students in preparing scientific and applied research that addresses economic and developmental topics of strategic importance to Sharjah, such as the investor satisfaction index, investment plans and priorities according to the Emirate’s vision, in addition to studying the quality of life in Sharjah.
In addition, SEDD praised the efforts of the participating students, stressing that these initiatives contribute to preparing qualified young cadres capable of contributing to shaping a sustainable innovative and knowledge-based economy, as the Department believes that involving students in preparing applied economic studies contributes to the development of economic policies and enhances the competitiveness of the business environment in Sharjah.
Moreover, SEDD called to carry on such fruitful cooperation with UoS, to support the achievement of common goals in developing economic work and consolidating the emirate’s position as an attractive knowledge-based investment centre.
Meanwhile, UoS has retained its position as the top university in the United Arab Emirates for the third consecutive year in the US News Best Global Universities rankings for 2026-27.
It ranked 247th worldwide and 57th in Asia, standing out among institutions from more than 100 countries evaluated in a system that measures research performance and global and regional academic reputation across 13 indicators.
The University’s strong showing was bolstered by notable advances across several disciplines, most prominently in green and sustainable science and technology, which ranked ninth globally.
Energy and fuels ranked 27th, while engineering ranked 77th. The University also secured high positions in chemical engineering, clinical medicine, electrical and electronic engineering, physical chemistry, and pharmacology and toxicology.
On this occasion, Prof. Esameldin Agamy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, extended his congratulations to Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the UoS, on an achievement he said reflected the University’s leading standing at both the regional and international levels.
Professor Agamy said that retaining the top position among UAE universities for the third consecutive year in this prestigious global ranking was the result of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed Al Qasimi’s vision and steadfast commitment to advancing scientific research and higher education to the highest international standards.
He added that the University’s marked progress across several disciplines, particularly environmental and sustainable sciences, energy and fuels, and engineering, reflects the success of its strategy to strengthen the foundations of applied research.
