Abu Dhabi Police have warned drivers, especially those with diabetes, of the dangers of driving when experiencing fits of hypoglycemia, as this directly affects concentration and response speed while driving, which may lead to serious traffic accidents.
Low blood sugar levels can cause sudden symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, poor concentration and slowed reaction time, all of which negatively affect a driver’s ability to control the vehicle and make sound decisions on the road, they said.
The Directorate General of Traffic and Patrols stressed the necessity for drivers to ensure that their blood sugar levels were stable before driving, to stop immediately upon feeling any sudden symptoms and not to resume driving until their blood sugar levels returned to normal.
It underscored the importance of carrying fast-absorbing sugary substances such as juices or sweets inside the vehicle to deal with emergencies.
It also underlined the importance of abiding by health guidelines and regular medical follow-up in order to preserve the safety of drivers and road users, stressing that traffic safety is a shared responsibility that required everyone’s awareness and commitment.
