In a move reflecting the scale of European concern over regional tensions, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described her Gulf tour as a strategic mission to safeguard her country’s national security.
Speaking from the heart of the region, Meloni affirmed that Rome stands firmly with its partners in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar against what she called unjustified Iranian attacks, stressing that Italy’s security and economic future are closely tied to the stability of the Gulf region.
Meloni said her visit to the region is the first by a European leader since the new phase of the conflict began and carries a clear message of solidarity with partner and friendly nations facing unjustified attacks by Iran.
She explained that the purpose of the tour goes beyond symbolism, aiming to seriously pursue practical solutions to address the current challenges.
Energy and national interest
The Prime Minister warned that any destabilization in the Gulf would directly impact Italian citizens, stating: “When security here is shaken, energy prices are affected, costs rise for businesses, and the purchasing power of families is harmed.”
Meloni revealed figures highlighting Italy’s dependence on the region, noting that Qatar alone supplies 10% of Italy’s natural gas needs.
She added that Gulf countries account for about 15% of Italy’s total oil imports.
Freedom of navigation and the Strait of Hormuz
Meloni noted that she is discussing with regional leaders ways to de-escalate tensions and ensure freedom of navigation, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global energy and trade flows.
She concluded by saying that foreign policy for her government is not merely a “theoretical subject,” but a practical tool to protect Italian jobs and the country’s future by building strong alliances with reliable partners in key regions of global influence.
