Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) continued to enhance its readiness to deal with the weather conditions in the country through integrated proactive plans that focus on the safety of road users and ensure the smooth flow of traffic across the emirate concurrently with the weather fluctuations and the accompanying field challenges.
Eng. Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of SRTA, revealed that SRTA significantly raised the level of preparedness by intensifying field personnel and equipment across the various cities and regions of the emirate including Sharjah City, Central Region and Eastern Region to ensure a rapid response to any emergency, especially in key locations and large puddles.
Traffic management
SRTA developed flexible plans to manage traffic during unstable weather conditions based on continuous monitoring of the road network through smart systems and real-time analysis of traffic density to allow traffic to be directed to alternative routes when needed, he said.
He explained that specialised teams intervened immediately to address any traffic congestion that might arise due to rain or low visibility, while enhancing field presence at intersections and key streets, thus contributing to reducing travel time and raising the level of traffic safety.
Al Othmani pointed out that modern technologies played a pivotal role in supporting field efforts, as the central control room and call centres monitored the traffic situation round the clock, received public reports and dealt with them immediately with high efficiency, thus enhancing the speed of response and reducing the negative effects of the weather conditions.
Joint co-ordination
Meanwhile, Dr. Abdullah Al Ali, Director of Road Maintenance Department, stated that SRTA was in continuous co-ordination with the concerned authorities including Sharjah Police, municipalities and concerned entities to ensure unification of field efforts and integration of roles among all parties.
Such co-ordination included immediate exchange of information and distribution of tasks according to clear plans, thus enhancing the efficiency of response, reducing any potential impacts on traffic and raising the level of public safety in the emirate, he added.
SRTA called on road users to abide by traffic guidelines and speed limits, drive cautiously, avoid tailgating and using mobile phones while driving and stay away from large puddles to protect their safety and the safety of others.
