UN rights body to hold emergency session on Iran’s attacks on Gulf States

The United Nations Human Rights Council will hold an emergency session on Wednesday to examine the fallout from recent Iranian attacks on several Gulf and regional countries, amid rising international concern over civilian safety and regional stability.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the council said a coalition of countries is set to table a draft resolution condemning what it described as Iranian military aggression against Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The proposed resolution highlights that the attacks targeted civilians and critical infrastructure, leading to the deaths of innocent people, and underscores the urgent need to uphold international humanitarian law.

Diplomatic sources indicated that the draft is expected to call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, protection of civilians, and respect for national sovereignty. It may also urge accountability and support efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions in the region.
