Abu Dhabi Family, Civil and Administrative Cases Court obligated a man to pay Dhs270,400 plus a Dhs50,000 compensation to a woman in a fraud case.
The defendant met the victim through a social media app after impersonating someone else, presenting her with a fake family and leading her to believe that he was about to begin engagement procedures.
He, however, continued to exploit her with several reasons and excuses including his mother’s illness until he stopped communicating with her, closed his accounts and refused to respond to her.
Earlier, the victim filed a lawsuit against the defendant in which he requested the court to obligate him to pay her Dhs270,400, this being the total amount that he obtained from her unlawfully, plus a late payment interest at nine per cent from the date the amount was due according to a previous criminal case until full payment.
She also requested the court to obligate the defendant to pay her Dhs100,000 as comprehensive compensation for the material and moral harms she had befallen.
The plaintiff pleaded that the defendant met her through a social media app where he impersonated another man and was able to gain her trust by getting close to her socially and making her believe that he wanted to marry her.
He even came to her family’s house accompanied by people whom he introduced as members of his family and made her believe that he was starting engagement procedures, she said.
The defendant began later to ask her for money under various pretexts and excuses and as a result she transferred Dhs10,400 in several installments to a bank account of his choice followed by Dhs30,000, she added.
She also gave him Dhs180,000 in cash through a person he identified as his private driver, claiming it was for his mother’s treatment outside the country before she transferred Dhs40,000 and Dhs10,000 based on false claims related to various health and financial circumstances, she said.
This continued until he stopped communicating with her, closed his accounts and refused to respond to her, she added.
After reviewing the documents and the previously issued criminal ruling, the court came to the conclusion that the defendant unlawfully took Dhs270,400 from the plaintiff.
The court estimated the compensation that the plaintiff deserved for the harms she had befallen at Dhs50,000.
