Abu Dhabi Police have underlined the need for users of all types of bicycles to abide by traffic safety procedures, stressing the necessity for them to wear a helmet and a reflective vest, use lanes designated for bicycles and avoid carrying passengers or heavy weights in order to preserve their safety and the safety of road users.
Compliance with these requirements contributes to reducing accidents and injuries and promotes a culture of safe use of bicycles as a healthy and eco-friendly means of transportation, they said, underscoring that safety is a shared responsibility that requires awareness from riders and road users alike.
Customers can benefit from the ‘Amateur Cyclists Permit’ service, which allows them to request a temporary permit to use the public road (right lane) within the approved traffic safety regulations and procedures, they added, noting that this service comes in support of practising cycling in an organised and safe manner that ensures smooth traffic flow.
No matter if it is individual or group, the permit is valid according to the type of request but an accompanying vehicle with reflective plates and stickers is required to be available when permits are issued, they said.
It is also permissible to submit a request to issue permits for a maximum of 50 bicycles in one request, but the request must be submitted through the available channels three days at least before the date of use, they added.
The required documents include the customer’s ID in case of an individual permit and ID of the group leader in case of a group permit plus a request that shows the route of the bicycles, they said, noting that all requests are subject to internal approval by the competent authority in accordance with the approved procedures.
Abu Dhabi Police stated that the service is available through the Tamm platform and does not incur any fees, calling on those wishing to obtain more information to contact them on the toll-free number 8003333.
They reiterated that wearing a helmet and reflective vest and using designated lanes is not optional but a necessity to protect lives, noting that co-operation and abidance by instructions contribute to achieving the highest security and safety standards on the emirate’s roads.
