The Dubai Misdemeanour Court fined an African driver Dhs24,000 and ordered the suspension of his driving licence for three months after convicting him of driving under the effect of alcohol, causing an accident, fleeing the scene after hitting three vehicles, and driving against the flow of traffic.
The details of the incident date back to January 2026 when the police received a report of an accident in Al Rafaa area of Dubai.
A police man stated that a team of investigators rushed to the location, where it was found that the suspect had fled the scene after hitting three vehicles.
He added in the interrogations that it was revealed the suspect was African, and the vehicle was circulated, then the suspect was arrested, to be found under the effect of alcohol after his test showed a blood alcohol level of 153 mg, which made him incapable of the necessary concentration and control for safe driving.
On being questioned, he confessed that he did not observe road conditions or traffic rules while driving and that he swerved his vehicle against the flow of traffic, first colliding with a taxi, then continued driving to hit two other vehicles, causing various material damages. He allegedly fled the scene, violating the legal obligation to stop after causing a traffic accident.
According to the case documents, the court relied on the arrest and inspection report, and on the driver's confession during interrogations and before the court via video call from his detention, where he admitted to driving the vehicle under the effect of alcohol and causing the accident.
The court emphasised that merely driving a vehicle on a public road under the effect of alcohol poses a real danger to lives and property, and that it is a crime even if no injuries occur, noting that error, negligence, and lack of caution constituted the elements of the crime of unintentional damage.
Accordingly, the court fined the suspect Dhs20,000 for consuming alcohol and driving under its effect, Dhs2,000 for the charge of damage, and Dhs2,000 for the hit and run charge, along with the suspension of his driving licence for three months from the date of the verdict.
