In celebration of the authentic Emirati identity, and in its commitment to preserving inherited customs and traditions and passing them on to future generations, Abu Dhabi City Municipality organised the “Hag Al Laila” event in Khalifa City Square, in a festive and joyful atmosphere aimed at spreading happiness and joy among members of the community, and enhancing the quality of life.
The event witnessed wide attendance from children, families, and various age groups, engaging them in enjoyable and meaningful community activities.
The atmosphere reflected the values of generosity and social cohesion, as grandmothers and mothers revisited memories of their childhood and shared the children’s joy in celebrating this deeply rooted heritage occasion.
As part of its efforts to bring happiness to the residents of Khalifa City, the event featured a diverse programme of heritage activities and traditional games competitions, such as Al Ayala, alongside heritage seating areas and the serving of traditional foods, which added an authentic and distinctive character to the event.
The “Hag Al Laila” event is considered one of the most prominent heritage celebrations held on the night of mid-Sha’ban. Its origins trace back to long-standing traditions associated with the approach of the holy month of Ramadan, when Emirati children would roam neighbourhoods wearing traditional attire and carrying cloth bags to collect gifts of sweets and nuts generously offered by residents. This inherited social tradition, known as “Gargee’an,” continues to keep this cultural legacy alive in memory and conscience, generation after generation.
Abu Dhabi City Municipality continues to offer a diverse program of events throughout the year in its community facilities designed to enhance quality of life and strengthen family bonds, by providing unique experiences within facilities that have become favorite family destinations, known for providing a safe, welcoming and attractive environment for all.
