Abu Dhabi celebrated on Wednesday the advent of the new year 2026, "Year of the Family," as fireworks displays lit up the city’s sky, amid a large turnout of citizens and residents who flocked early to public places to follow the celebrations in a joyful family atmosphere.
The New Year celebrations held mainly in Abu Dhabi Corniche, Reem Island, Yas Island and other locations, witnessed the presence of thousands of families, which were keen to share this occasion with family members, in a scene that reflected the societal values carried by the ‘Year of the Family.’
The public flocked from the afternoon hours to parks, waterfronts and open spaces to ensure suitable viewing locations before the start of the fireworks displays.
Families spread out across the green spaces and open areas along the waterfront, many having prepared seating areas in anticipation of the fireworks display, taking advantage of the mild winter weather. The crowds grew noticeably as sunset approached, especially in locations offering a direct view of the display’s trajectory.
At midnight, the fireworks displays began, painting a harmonious spectacle of light across Abu Dhabi sky. The audience responded with applause and cheers of joy, creating a collective moment that brought together families, residents and visitors to celebrate the start of a new year themed family.
The colours of the fireworks were reflected on the sea water, creating a striking visual display that prompted many to document the scene with their phones, while social media platforms witnessed widespread circulation of photos and videos taken by the public from different locations along the Corniche and neighboring areas.
The festive atmosphere continued until late into the night, as many families preferred to stay after the show to take commemorative photos and spend more time on the promenade, in a calm atmosphere that reflected the spirit of the ‘Year of the Family 2026’ and its festive beginnings in Abu Dhabi.
