As part of the “Our Winter is Safe and Enjoyable” campaign, the Abu Dhabi Police and the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority called on the public to adhere to general safety guidelines when using firewood and heating appliances, in order to avoid accidents resulting from misuse.
They also urged people to avoid behaviours and actions that could cause accidents such as house fires or suffocation when using heating appliances.
They also warned against lighting fires using firewood or charcoal indoors without observing safety measures, to avoid suffocation and fire outbreaks. Furthermore, they stressed the importance of exercising caution when using a wood-burning stove, particularly at night, and of not sleeping next to it in order to avoid the risk of suffocation or fire.
The stove should be lit outside or special exhaust fans should be provided to allow the smoke to rise upwards while maintaining proper ventilation.
The stove should never be left burning once finished and must be extinguished outside the house.
People are also urged to ensure the safety and durability of the wires connecting the heater to the electrical source.
In addition, they are advised not to place the wires under carpets and to keep children away from the heater to prevent them from touching it, being exposed to its heat or causing it to fall onto flammable materials.
It was also advised that the heater should not be used for heating, drying or lighting incense.
The heater should be turned off when leaving the room or going to sleep, and should not be placed near water or in a humid area.
