The Federal Traffic Law has increased the penalty for stopping suddenly in the middle of the road without justification by slapping the driver with a fine of Dhs1,000 plus six black points, said Juma Salem Bin Suwaidan, Director of General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police.
He warned drivers against stopping in the middle of the road for any reason, urging them to immediately move to the nearest exit or safe shoulder to ensure everyone’s safety.
If the vehicle cannot be moved, it is crucial to contact the Command and Control Centre on 999 for assistance to prevent serious accidents and traffic disruptions, he added.
Stopping without justification can lead to subsequent collisions, either because the drivers of the vehicles approaching from behind are inattentive or become distracted when traffic stops suddenly, he said.
He also warned of the dangers of lack of focus and distraction while driving, stressing that such behaviours could result in fatalities and serious injuries, not to mention the legal consequences.
The legal responsibility lies primarily with the driver who stops suddenly and without warning on highways, as this can cause rear-end collisions, he said, urging drivers to avoid tailgating to allow others to stop safely and prevent collisions.
Bin Suwaidan called for stricter penalties for those who deliberately stop in the middle of the road, because this behaviour poses a direct danger to the lives of others, stressing that safe driving requires a high sense of responsibility, constant focus, observation and anticipation for the safety of all road users.
