His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced that Professor Abbas El Gamal is the winner of the Arab Minds Award in the Engineering and Technology category.
Sheikh Mohammed said: "Brothers and sisters, as we are accustomed to celebrate every year the Arab minds with the Arab Minds Award, and after receiving thousands of nominations... Today, we announce the winner of the Arab Minds Award in the Engineering and Technology category for 2025, Professor Abbas El Gamal from Egypt, Hitachi Professor at Stanford University's School of Engineering, who has made pioneering scientific contributions to network information theory which have laid the foundation for many modern digital networks around the world.
Professor El Gamal contributed to the development of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and CMOS image sensors used in smart phones, and his work has contributed to the development of technologies supporting digital sensing, computing and communications systems.
He has published more than 230 scientific papers, and his book “Network Information Theory” is considered a global reference for engineering and technology students. Major technology companies around the world benefit from his research.”
