Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, met Tom Fletcher, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator at OCHA, in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss the importance of ongoing US mediation on Sudan, and important efforts by the Quad towards an unconditional and immediate ceasefire.
With humanitarian needs significant and rising, Al Hashimy and Tom Fletcher also discussed the importance of safe, rapid and unhindered humanitarian access across Sudan, protection of civilians, adherence to international humanitarian law, accountability for atrocities, and scaled up funding for principled humanitarian support.
Separately, Dr Anwar Gargash, the diplomatic advisor to the President of the UAE, via (X) directed an appeal to the Sudanese army commander Abdel Fattah Al Burhan, calling for urgent agreement to an immediate humanitarian truce.
Gargash stated via the platform: “We urge Burhan to urgently agree to an immediate humanitarian truce, the priority must be protecting civilians and opening access for humanitarian aid throughout Sudan.”
A couple of day ago also in his official X account, Dr Gargash has said, “The country (Sudan) was pushed toward the abyss when both warring parties overthrew the civilian government.”
He added, “Sudan’s unity and the re-emergence of Muslim Brotherhood influence are major concerns.”
Dr Gargash continued, “The path forward is clear: an immediate ceasefire, accountability for atrocities by both parties, unrestricted humanitarian access, and a credible transition to an independent civilian government.”
Earlier, Reem Al Hashimy in an statement had said, “Once more, General Burhan refuses peace overtures. In his rejection of the US Peace Plan for Sudan, and his repeated refusal to accept a ceasefire, he demonstrates consistently obstructive behavior. This must be called out. The Sudanese people bear the heaviest cost.”
She added, “The UN is now describing the situation as one of the worst humanitarian tragedies in modern history where access to aid is being weaponized, and civilians are being starved by design. The UAE remains gravely concerned by the conduct of both warring parties whose escalating military actions and continued refusal to facilitate humanitarian access are driving Sudan further into collapse.
“The UAE calls for an unconditional and immediate ceasefire to end this civil war,” she further said.
She concluded, “The UAE welcomes the engagement of President Trump to prevent Sudan from sliding further into extremism, fragmentation and humanitarian catastrophe. A unified regional and international effort is essential to ending atrocities against civilians. We must restore a credible path towards a peaceful, united and credible Sudan.”
