Dubai Court of Cassation rejected an appeal filed by an Arab woman against a verdict issued by Dubai Misdemeanors Court and upheld by Dubai Court of Appeal, fining her Dhs10,000 and obligating her to pay Dhs200,000 in blood money to the heirs of an Arab whom she ran over while under the influence of alcoholic beverages.
As a result of the serious traffic accident, two other people of different nationalities were also injured and three vehicles were damaged.
According to the case, which dated back to October last year, the defendant consumed alcoholic beverages late at night and then drove her vehicle on a two-way side street in the Al Qudra area.
While driving, she suddenly swerved to the right and collided with another vehicle, causing it to be propelled forward and crash into a lamppost and a second vehicle parked on the side of the road before bouncing back and colliding with a third vehicle.
The defendant’s vehicle then veered off the road again and struck three pedestrians, one of whom succumbed later to his severe injuries, while the other two sustained multiple injuries.
The forensic report proved that the defendant was driving under the influence of alcohol, which she confirmed in her confessions during the interrogations as she stated that she was surprised to find the injured standing in the middle of the road.
The court indicated that the defendant’s fault was in driving while intoxicated and not taking the necessary precautions, while the two injured people should be held partly responsible as a result of standing in the middle of the road, jeopardizing their lives and the lives of others.
The court convicted the defendant and held her responsible for the damage caused to the vehicles.
