As part of its ongoing efforts to develop infrastructure and enhance economic and community activities in the emirate, the Department of Public Works has completed the “Souq Al Jum'ah” project in the Al Madam area.
The project is in line with the aspirations of the residents and aims to improve the quality of life.
The project forms part of the Department’s strategic plan to provide integrated service facilities that support commercial activity and meet customers' needs.
The market covers a large area and combines commercial functions, community services and entertainment.
The market building has a ground floor with an area of 3,379 square metres.
It includes 44 shops, each with an area of 60 square metres, as well as a prayer room for men, a prayer room for women and public toilets for both genders.
There is also an administrative office to organise operational processes. The project also includes an external central square measuring 11,527 square metres. This includes a future garden, a children’s play area and an area dedicated to selling traditional foods. This enhances the heritage character and encourages community interaction.
In terms of external works, an internal asphalt road network was implemented and a 214-space parking area was created. In addition, there are paved external areas covering 9,709 square metres and green spaces covering 3,262 square metres. These features give the site a balanced aesthetic and environmental character.
This achievement is a valuable addition to the Department’s projects, which focus on increasing community satisfaction and integrating urban development with public services. It reflects the department’s commitment to applying the highest quality and sustainability standards to its important projects.
Eng. Abdullah Al Tunaiji, Director of the Department, said, “The completion of the Souq Al Jum'ah project in the Al Madam area is an important step in the Public Works Department's efforts to enhance community and commercial development in the Emirate of Sharjah. We implemented the Souq according to the highest technical and environmental standards to create a vital centre combining commercial functions, community services and recreational facilities to meet the needs of customers and improve quality of life in the Al Madam area.”
Al Tunaiji added, “This project is a continuation of the Souq Al Jum'ah in the Central Region. The department has previously completed the Souq Al Jum'ah in Mleiha and Al Bataeh, as well as the Al Masyal in Al Dhaid. This completes the system of traditional markets that reflect heritage and support economic activity. The markets provide integrated platforms for traders and residents, enhancing Sharjah’s position as a leading destination for urban and community development.”
