Dubai Criminal Court sentenced an Arab to life in jail to be followed by deportation after being convicted of trafficking and abusing narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
The court also acquitted two other Arab suspects after they were found not to be involved in the crime.
The case dates back to April when the General Department of Anti-Narcotics received a tip-off that the defendant possessed a quantity of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and was about to sell it to a police undercover agent for Dhs100.
After a warrant was obtained from the Public Prosecution, a trap was set up to arrest the defendant in the act.
A policeman stated in the interrogations that a team of detectives from the General Department of Anti-Narcotics set a trap and the defendant was caught while handing the drug over to the undercover agent and receiving Dhs100 in return.
The defendant was caught red-handed with a herbal material weighing 61 grams in his possession which was later proved to be marijuana.
The policeman added that the defendant lived in an apartment in Al Satwa area, which he shared with two others.
Based on a warrant issued by the prosecution to search the defendant’s residence, the team found two other suspects inside the apartment, who were later found to have no connection to or knowledge of what the defendant was doing in terms of promoting or abusing drugs.
While searching the defendant’s apartment, the team found a transparent plastic bag containing marijuana and a plastic bottle containing a liquid suspected to be mixed with a narcotic substance.
When the suspects were questioned about the seized items, they denied any connection to them.
On interrogation, the defendant confessed to having possessed drugs for personal use only and denied any intention to trade or promote them.
He also admitted to using several types of drugs and psychotropic substances before he was arrested. The forensic evidence report confirmed that the sample taken from the defendant’s urine contained various narcotic substances.
