The Al Ain Civil, Commercial and Administrative Cases Court ordered a man to pay Dhs15,000 in compensation to a woman after he verbally abused her. He was convicted in a criminal case.
Specifically, a woman filed a lawsuit against the man, requesting that he be ordered to pay her Dhs51,000 in compensation for the moral and psychological damage she suffered, as well as fees and expenses. The lawsuit alleged that he had insulted her with indecent language and committed an indecent act. He was found guilty in a criminal case because she suffered damages as a result of his actions.
In its ruling, the Court explained that it is legally established that anyone who causes harm to another is obliged to compensate the victim for the damage caused. In all cases, compensation is based on the harm suffered by the affected party and loss of earnings, provided this is a direct result of the harmful act. The right to compensation includes moral damages, such as an assault on another's freedom, honour, reputation, social or financial standing.
The court found that the defendant had made an error, as stated above, and that the plaintiff had suffered harm in the form of reputational damage and psychological and material distress. There was a causal relationship between the error and the damage, and the defendant was legally obliged to compensate her. The court estimated this to be Dhs15,000 to cover all material and moral damages.
