The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) is set to introduce ten new electric buses to its intercity transport fleet next month. This will increase the number of electric buses in operation to 20.
They will run on major routes connecting Sharjah to several neighbouring emirates, most notably the Sharjah–Ajman route.
SRTA has confirmed that ten electric buses are currently in operation on several intercity routes and that final preparations are underway to launch an additional ten buses next month, once registration and factory preparation procedures have been completed.
100% electric
Ali Rashid Al Qars, Head of Operations at the Authority's Intercity Transport Department, pointed out that this step is part of efforts to shift towards sustainable transport and reduce carbon emissions. This is being achieved by enhancing the intercity transport fleet with environmentally friendly, 100% electric buses.
He added that electric buses are identified on the bus tracking system, which is connected to the Authority's control room, by their green colour, which symbolises clean energy and environmental sustainability. Purple is used to designate diesel-powered buses.
He added that electric buses have started operating on the Sharjah–Ajman route due to heavy traffic and the presence of charging stations equipped for this purpose, including the main station at the shelter site. An integrated system for charging and daily maintenance has been installed.
Smart cameras
He explained that the new electric buses are equipped with advanced safety technology, including eight internal and external surveillance cameras to monitor driver behaviour and ensure passenger safety. The cameras feature sensors and instant alerts that are linked to the SRTA's operations room.
This enables direct communication with the driver in emergency situations and real-time monitoring of the bus. The spaces and aisles are fully accessible for people with disabilities, ensuring easy boarding and disembarkation.
The buses are fitted with state-of-the-art air conditioning and passenger comfort systems, and can carry multiple seated and standing passengers.
Four consecutive trips
Al Qars stated that current electric buses can travel up to 250 kilometres on a single charge, demonstrating high operational efficiency and low carbon emissions.
They operate with a safety system that preserves battery life through a 'safety mode' feature and can complete around four consecutive trips between Sharjah and Ajman before requiring a recharge.
He explained that operating electric buses between cities represent the first stage of a broader sustainable transport project. He added that the operating and maintenance costs of electric buses are significantly lower than those of diesel-powered buses.
Maintenance operations are limited to monitoring the batteries, cooling systems and filters. There is no need to change oil or replace complex mechanical parts, as is the case with conventional buses.
Digital payment
He also announced that the SRTA is planning to introduce a smart payment system on buses as part of its digital transformation strategy for the transport sector.
The new buses will be fitted with state-of-the-art devices that facilitate electronic payments using Sayer cards linked to the user's identity.
This step is part of the authority's efforts to provide passengers with fast, flexible digital solutions and enhance the smart mobility experience in the emirate.
In the coming period, the SRTA intends to expand its smart payment system by linking Sayer cards to bank cards and smartphone systems such as Apple Pay and Google Pay.
The Authority also aims to enable family members to share a single account, so that all family members can use the same card. This will make the service more accessible and provide users with greater flexibility when travelling between cities.
