In light of the call to exercise caution due to the current unstable weather conditions affecting various parts of the UAE, motorists are urged to adhere to the variable speed limits indicated on road signs and electronic guidance panels, and to steer clear of flooded areas.
The UAE government has introduced amendments to the Federal Traffic Law to introduce regulations governing driving and road usage during rainfall, flooding and running valleys.
The law stipulates severe penalties for causing death by using a vehicle in the valley during flash floods, namely imprisonment and a fine.
Anyone who causes death by using a vehicle shall be punished by imprisonment and a fine of not less than Dhs50,000 or one of these penalties.
If the act occurs in certain specific cases, including driving a vehicle in a valley during flash floods, the punishment is imprisonment for a period of not less than one year and a fine of not less than Dhs100,000 or one of these penalties.
To ensure safety during periods of unstable weather, drivers are required to carry first aid equipment and backup lighting, and to secure any outdoor tools and equipment that could be blown away.
