A man identified as SM did not realise that his recurring cough would bring him the worst news of his life.
He sat in the small hospital room, awaiting the doctor's words that fell upon him like a thunderbolt: “You have advanced pharyngeal cancer.”
For a moment, he felt the ground shake beneath his feet and all the dreams he had built for his family were crumbling one by one.
He faced many questions: How would he confront this disease? How would he protect his wife and children from the harshness of need after the costs of treatment had weighed heavily on him and robbed his small home of its laughter and peace?
Throughout his life, he was a struggling father, working as a modestly paid employee in a private sector establishment. He did not have much, but he had a big heart and a dream to provide a decent life and a secure future for his wife and two children. He would return home every evening, physically exhausted but filled with contentment as the smiles of his two sons lighting up the place were enough for him to forget all his worries.
His condition, advanced oropharyngeal cancer, was enough to shake the family’s foundations and turn their lives into hell. His days turned into an endless series of exhausting chemotherapy sessions, and with each session, he lost some of his strength, while the medical bills snowballed, draining what remained of his energy and life.
As time passed, even his meager salary was no longer enough to cover medical costs and consequently debts mounted and options dwindled.
Because misfortunes never come singly, the family was forced to make a painful decision: the two children would temporarily leave school to stay with their father during his bitter struggle with illness. It was a heartbreaking decision; the father, who had always dreamed of a bright future for his two sons, was now seeing their dreams shatter before his eyes.
Amidst this gloom and with despair creeping into their hearts, the family submitted an urgent file to Beit Al Khair Society through its Elaj humanitarian project.
After a careful study of the family’s medical and social situation, the news that changed the course of events was received: the society had generously allocated Dhs382,000 to cover the largest part of the treatment plan.
It was a pivotal moment; it was not just financial assistance but a life restored and hope renewed.
The children returned to school with smiles, while the father was able to continue his treatment journey with greater confidence as the burden of debt and fear was lifted from his shoulders.
This is just one of thousands stories written daily by Beit Al Khair’s actions. Beit Al Khair Society spends more than Dhs20 million annually on medical treatment of patients, both citizens and residents, proving that humanity knows no nationality and does not discriminate between one person and another.
An enduring image remains: a father fighting illness with faith, a family regaining its smile and a society that has made the values of compassion and solidarity a bridge through which those in need can cross from the harshness of hardship to the warmth of life.
