The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court found eight individuals guilty of sexually exploiting children online.
Those children were lured by the convicts through online gaming platforms and social media sites, where they were tempted to send and receive pornographic material featuring children.
The sentences issued ranged from three to 15 years' imprisonment, along with fines of up to Dhs1 million. The mobile phones and devices used in committing the offences were confiscated, and the convicted individuals were prohibited from accessing any information network in the future. In consequence of the offences committed, the online accounts associated therewith were deactivated, and the sentences of three of the convicted individuals will be enforced by deportation from the country upon completion.
The convictions resulted from comprehensive investigations conducted by the Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution, which closely monitored online activity deemed suspicious and cases of electronic exploitation targeting minors. The Public Prosecution issued an arrest warrant for the defendants, summoning them for investigation. The suspects confessed to the crimes with which they were charged, and technical examinations of their electronic devices revealed the presence of child pornography, which had been obtained and circulated via information technology.
Following a thorough investigation, the Public Prosecution concluded that the defendants should be referred to the relevant criminal court for trial. The court issued rulings in accordance with the prevailing legislation, convicting all defendants.
The Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution has cautioned members of the public against engaging with unknown individuals on social media platforms, and has advised against the provision of data, information, or personal photographs that could be utilised for the purpose of cyber-extortion.
