The Ministry of Education has announced the adoption of a procedural guide on attendance and absences for the 2025/26 academic year.
The guide includes a list of reasons that may result in a student being absent from school, which are considered acceptable.
Acceptable excuses included illness, travelling for medical treatment, participating in national and international events, emergency circumstances and the death of a first- or second-degree relative.
Special exceptions have also been approved for people of determination and students with chronic illnesses to ensure that their right to education is not compromised.
Furthermore, the Ministry has instructed schools to develop individual support plans for students who are at risk of frequent absences. These plans include provisions such as psychological and educational support sessions, regular communication with parents and incentive programmes designed to promote regular attendance. These plans will be periodically reviewed to ensure their continued effectiveness.
The Ministry has created this guide with the aim of instilling the values of responsibility and accountability in students, as these are fundamental to their future. The guide also seeks to foster a more cohesive and disciplined school community.
The guide further encourages attendance on important days, such as Fridays, days before or after official holidays, days before final semester exams, and the last two weeks of the second semester. This is because these periods significantly impact the continuity and quality of the educational process.
The Ministry also stressed that school attendance is a prerequisite for academic success, reflecting a student's awareness of, and concern for, their future.
