The Sharjah Police General Command, represented by the Eastern Region Police Department, successfully helped a 7-year-old child feel safe again. The quick response to a report from the child's mother was the key factor. She stated that her child had been extremely frightened following a traffic accident. This had a clear impact on his mental state, making him reluctant to leave the house.
Colonel Walid Khamis Al Yamahi, Director of the Eastern Region Police Department, gave a detailed account of a report he had received from the mother of a child living in Khorfakkan City.
She stated in the report that her son had suffered a state of extreme panic following a sudden traffic incident.
The child reportedly had just started to cross the road when a vehicle travelling at high speed approached, disregarding the red traffic signal and potentially hitting the child. Although the incident did not result in any physical injury, the psychological impact was severe, necessitating urgent intervention by specialist teams from the department.
He added that he had visited the child at home and provided him with psychological support through positive dialogue and by giving him symbolic gifts to make him smile.
He also took the child on an outdoor tour, accompanied by police officers. This helped rebuild the child's confidence in his surroundings, instil a sense of reassurance, and strengthen his belief that the security department are there to protect children and safeguard their psychological well-being.
Colonel Al Yamahi stressed that community work is an integral part of the Sharjah Police system, embodying its vision of building a safe and supportive community environment, particularly for children. He noted that positive psychological interventions are a fundamental pillar of community policing efforts given their pivotal role in protecting young people, fostering a sense of security and stability, and fostering mutual trust between society and the security establishment.
Colonel Al Yamahi pointed out that legal measures had been taken against the driver in accordance with the Traffic Law and that the vehicle had been impounded for 30 days. He emphasised that this incident highlights the importance of adhering fully to traffic rules and legal regulations, stressing that running red lights can cause serious accidents and leave profound psychological scars, particularly on children, as well as undermine their sense of safety in public places.
He further urged drivers to drive responsibly and contribute to protecting lives and enhancing community safety, in line with the efforts of Sharjah Police to establish a sustainable and safe traffic culture.
