The Sharjah Public Works Department has announced a partial closure of University City Road, extending from the intersection of Sheikh Saud Bin Sultan Al Qasimi Street to the Zawaya Walk project in the Al Shahba area. The closure represents a component of the Middle Road Project, which is a programme of works designed for the extraction of surface water and groundwater. The project is being implemented by the department with a view to enhancing infrastructure and accommodating increasing rainfall during the coming seasons.
The closure commenced on Tuesday and is scheduled to continue for a period of 40 days, with the final day of closure falling on August 25. The project encompasses the development of drainage networks, pipes, and associated infrastructure, with the objective of ensuring unobstructed water flow during periods of intense rainfall and of mitigating the accumulation of water on critical roadways.
The Department also facilitated a smooth traffic diversion, employing alternative routes to ensure the continued flow of traffic. Signage was installed at the site, and field teams were assigned to oversee the implementation of the works and guarantee pedestrian safety in the area.
It is urging community members to cooperate with the work teams and adhere to the signage posted around the project area, appreciating the public's understanding of the infrastructure improvement requirements, which will have a positive impact on quality of life and the durability of the emirate's road network.
The current work forms part of the department's comprehensive plans, which are being implemented in phases. The plans aim to enhance drainage capacity in vital areas and improve the level of services provided to Sharjah's citizens and residents.
